Петиция подписана 800 профессорами, президентами колледжей и преподавателями из 268 колледжей и университетов из 45 штатов. Признание, говорится в петиции, будет в отвечать интересам всего мира, а также экономически выгодно как СССР, так и США.
Петиция была составлена Братством примирения. Среди подписавших ее: глава Экспериментального колледж Висконсина Александр Мейклджон, президент Смит-колледжа в Массачусетсе Уильям Аллен Нилсон, профессор философии Колумбийского университета Джон Дьюи, профессор политической экономики университета Питтсбурга Бенджамин Уильямс и профессор экономики Университета Пенсильвании Эрнест Паттерсон.
По словам главы Братства примирения Рейнгольда Нибура, содержащимся в тексте петиции, непризнание Советского Союза представляет серьезную угрозу для мира в нынешней сложной политической ситуации. Братство примирения, продолжает он, надеется, что эта петиция пробудит у США желание признать Советский Союз и убедит администрацию и конгресс сделать этот необходимый шаг.
Несмотря на то что кампания за признание активно набирает обороты, у нее есть свои противники: Секретарь Национальной гражданской федерации Ральф Изли недавно проводил бурную антисоветскую кампанию в правительственных кругах, в конгрессе и среди лидеров Американской федерации труда.
Президент Американской федерации труда Уильям Грин недавно заявил, что продолжает следовать своей политике против признания СССР. Он также добавил, что федерация призвала своих друзей в конгрессе противостоять любой попытке способствовать признанию.

A petition demanding the recognition of the Soviet Union by the USA has been presented to President-elect Roosevelt by 800 professors, presidents of colleges, and teachers representing 268 colleges and universities in 45 spates. Recognition, says the petition, is in the interest of the whole world and will be economically beneficial to both the USSR and the USA.
The petition was drawn up by the Fellowship of Reconciliation, and among those who signed it are: Alexander Meiklejohn—head of the Experimental College of the University of Wisconsin; Wm. Allen Neilson — President of Smith College, Mass.; John Rogers Commons — Professor of Economics at the University of Wisconsin; Maclay Goodson — Professor of International Law at Harvard, and formerly member of the Juridical Department of the League of Nations; John Dewey—Professor of Philosophy, Columbia University; Benjamin Williams—Professor of Political Economy at Pittsburgh University, and Erntest Patterson—Professor of Economics at Pennsylvania University.
In a statement accompanying the petition, Reinhold Niebuhr, head of the Fellowship of Reconciliation, declares that the non-recognition of the Soviet Union fcy the USA constitutes one of the most serious menaces to peace in the present critical world situation. The Fellowship hopes, he continues, that this petition will arouse an ardent desire for recognition in the USA, which will compel the administration and Congress take this necessary step.
As the campaign for recognition gains momentum the opponents to recognition are becoming more active. Ralph Easley, Secretary of the National Civic Federation, recently has been carrying on a vigorous anti-Soviet campaign, in governmental and Congressional circles, and among the leaders of the American Federation of Labor.
William Green, President of the A. F of L. issued a statement recen ly in which he declared that the A. F. of L maintained its former policy of opposition to the recognition of the USSR. Green added that the Federation was appealing to its friends in Congress resolutely to oppose any attempt to recognize the Soviet Union.
