//Soviet scientists report: the ice area in the Arctic is rapidly decreasing.

AN ARTICLE published recently in the Soviet press by Prof. N. N. Zubov, one of the most prominent of Arctic explorers, has aroused considerable interest not only in scientific circles but also among the general public of the country. Professor Zubov declared in this article that on the basis of many years of observation by Soviet scientists, he had come to the conclusion that the climate of the Arctic was becoming milder year after year.

The Arctic is, in the opinion of the professor, returning to the climatic conditions that obtained there about 1,000 years ago, that is, in the times of the Vikings. As the ancient sagas narrate, the Vikings sailed without any particular difficulty in their primitive ships along the southeastern coast of Greenland, which has been inaccessible to navigators for many centuries now owing to ice.

ONE’S attention is first of all attracted to the way in which the ice has been retreating in recent years everywhere in the Arctic," declared away, Professor Zubov. «Some of the islands at Franz Josef Land have melted while others have, as it were, split into two and new straits have been formed between them.

«Several islands in the Laptev Sea that consists almost entirely of continental ice are now diminishing sharply. The Semyonov and Vasilyev islands were in 1823: they were mapped in 1823: they were surveyed again in 1912 and 1913, and finally in 1936. During that time, Semyonov Island shrank to one-eighth its former length, while Vasilyev Island, which was about seven kilometers long, disappeared altogether. Only a small submerged bank was found in its place.

«As is known, a feature of a vast region of the northern Urals and Siberia is that the soil at some depth beneath the surface is eternally frozen. This layer of soil has never thawed and is a remnant of the glacial period.

«Another, no less interesting, phenomenon has also been brought to light. Regular observation of the Atlantic water flowing into the Barents and Greenland seas has shown that each square centimeter of this water now ‘hides,' as it were, 14 kilogram-calories more heat than at the beginning of this century. This heat continues to accumulate, reducing the iciness of our seas and mitigating the winter temperature of the air.»

Several other surprising facts were cited by Professor Zubov in support of his contention: the cod, a fish which does not like the cold, is moving to the north; the area of the ice in the Barents Sea has decreased by 20 per cent the last 13 during years, and Soviet ice breakers have penetrated as far north as 83 deg. lat.

PROF. L. BERG, corresponding member of tfie Academy of Sciences of the USSR, is of the opinion that the whole globe is getting warmer. Expressing his views on Professor Zubov’s article, Professor Berg wrote in the Soviet press:

«Quite recently, when attention was first drawn to the fact that the Arctic was becoming warmer, it was thought that the rise in the temperature of the northern seas was due to the increased pressure of the water of the Gulf Stream,» he wrote in his article. «It must be borne in mind, however, that the Gulf Stream is only one of the factors governing climate and weather in the north. Apart from this, we have already seen that the southern hemisphere are also becoming warmer. It is obvious, therefore, that it is not a matter of the Gulf Stream, which is itself being influenceby this process.

IN THIS way, the question as to the cause of the rise in the temperature on earth and how long this process is likely to continue so far remains open. As the Moscow News will publish the views of other eminent Soviet scientists on this subject in the near future, here, to conclude, is a brief statement made by one of the leading workers of the Northern Sea Route Administration.

«I hope» he declared, «that scientists will succeed in establishing the causes of this process and also its duration»

«Let us hope, in the meantime, that it will continue for some years more and that nature will help us, Bolsheviks, to clear the Northern Sea Route of ice. Should nature refuse this assistance, however, then our splendid ice breakers will come to our aid.»

It only remains to concur fully with this wish.
