На каждой улице можно увидеть веселые группы людей, направляющиеся на окраину. Над плечами возвышаются лыжи, похожие странное оружие, на любой возраст — совсем крошечные, словно игрушечные, для малышей, чуть побольше для мальчиков и девочек и и длинные — для взрослых. В морозном воздухе звучат три фразы: «Парк культуры», «Сокольники», «Ленинские горы». Те, у кого есть лыжи, предпочитают две речные станции, поскольку опасно, да и невозможно кататься по многолюдным проезжим улицам. Сотни фигур мчатся на запад по белой поверхности, направляясь в центры зимних видов спорта.

A few flakes float down from the gray sky and the air is crisp with promise of snow. Moscow wakes early. Gay groups in every street, bound for the outskirts. Groups 'that bristle with long skis, carried high on the shoulder, like strangely archaic weapons. There are skis for every age; toy-like things for toddling youngsters, iniddle-sized ones for half-grown boys and girls; and long shafts for the adult. Three phrases dominate in the frosty air: «Culture Park,» «Sokolniki,» the «Lenin Hills.» Those who own skis favor the two river-stations, since it is hazardous if not impossible to introduce eight feet of hickory into crowded street-cars. Whereas the frozen Moskva makes a splendid highway to the ski-fields. Hundreds of figures sweep westward over its white surface, bound for the (разорвана строка, неразборчиво) capital city has organized centers for winter sports.

Winter-sport for everyone who enjoys exercise in the white out-of-doors. No longer the privilege of a favored few, skiing and skating are mass sports within the reach of every boy and girl, every worker in Moscow. The would-be sportsman docs not even have to possess skis or skates of his own. Every rink has skates to rent, as good skates as can be bought in any shop, screwed firmly on skating shoes. And in the ski-centers, forty kopeks procure a pair of mocasin-like ski-boots with turned-up toes to hold the ski-strap; and forty kopeks more, skis for a whole day’s sport on the snowy slopes. Sokolniki Park offers a splendid training ground for ski-novices. The timorous beginner has long stretches of gentle slope. He can speed over safe tracks through acres on acres of pine-woods, having the pleasant illusion through a of journeying cross-country virgin forest. Hundreds of figures dart among the tree-trunks; and mufflers make gay-colored caps bright splashes in the severe land- scape; young voices echo in the sharp air; and bursts of laughter ring out when one of the band makes an unlucky curve and goes down in a shower of snow.

The Culture Park is entirely given over to winter sportsmen. Every available surface has been flooded. There is not one ice-rink but a dozen, linked together with ice-roads. The skater is not obliged to turn round and round on a single frozen pool, but can have something of the joy of river skating on a smooth rink-surface At! day long men are busy scraping and flooding, keeping the ice glassy-smooth and free from snow. Hockey-players dash and scramble on the rink reserved for the game; skaters glide in couples and groups; while dozens of loud speakers broadcast the day’s radio concerts overhead, among the electric lamps that flood the skating-ground with light as soon astwilight falls.

И победители вместе с побежденными, обнявшись, отправляются в буфет. На Ленинских горах опытные спортсмены, притягивая взгляды, лавируют между соснами. Вдруг — крах! Один мужчина упал; нет, это девушка, которая смеется, поднимается, стряхивая снег со своих светлых волос и поправляя лыжи. Таким образом, весь день молодежь Москвы занимается спортом на открытом воздухе — с таким же веселым энтузиазмом, с каким советская молодежь во всем Союзе сегодня подходит к своим задачам.

To ski-enthusiasts, the Culture Park offers long stretches of pine-woods above the slope to the river. Bands of school-children on skis set out over the snow, a teacher in their midst. A company of Red Army men sweep single file down the bank, shooting far out onto the Moskva River below. Two broad-shouldered lads speed in from the pine-woods, bring up in a splendid curve before the main building of the ski-center, and plant two red flags in the snow. «A cross-country race is coming in,» someone explains. «Not-an individual race, you understand, but a contest between two factory teams.» The racers arrive all together with powdery-white shower as a rush and a the long skis sweep to a standstill. Jostling, laughter and hurrahs, as the winning team is named. And victors find vanquished, arms around shoulders, troop off to the buffet. Out on the Lenin Hills, expert sportsmen are taking drops among indulging in breath the pine-trees, poubly hazardous here, with the underbrush pricking up through the snow, forming nasty traps for the un- wary. Down they go, swift as the wind. Crash! One man is down; no, it is a girl who laughs as she picks herself up, shakes the snow from her ' blond hair and readjusts her skis. So, all day long, the youth of Moscow speeds through the bright winter air, giving to outdoor sport the same vuu (???), me same gay enthusiasm that the Soviet youth 'throughout the Union brings today to its tasks.

«Пятилетка за четыре года!» Этот лозунг стимулирует все усилия в рабочие дни — в школе, на фабрике и в офисе. А в свободный день на открытом воздухе, рабочие, развивайте легкие, запасайтесь энергией и жизненными силами для совместной работы над строительством социализма. На другом берегу замерзшей реке — старая Москва с ее сверкающими кремлевскими башнями; новая Москва с ее фабриками, внушительными блоками рабочих домов, клубов и учреждений. Москва — гигантская мастерская для рабочих, которые каждый день отдыхают на окраине. И кто бы ни наблюдал за ними на зимних холмах, не может не прийти к выводу, что молодежь Советского Союза, сегодня так доблестно работающая, знает, когда и как нужно развлекаться.

«The Five-Year Plan in Four!» The slogan galvanizes all effort during working-days—m school, factory, and office. And on the free day, out into the open, workers! Fill lungs with up muscles; store up vigor and energy for the team-work of socialist construction. Across the frozen river, lies Mos- cow—old Moscow with its glittering Kremlin towers; new Moscow with its factories, its imposing blocks of workers' houses, clubs, and institutions. Moscow, the giant work-shop for the workers who throng the outskirts on each day of rest. And whoever secs them, out of doors among the winter hills, cannot fail to conclude that the youth of the Soviet Union today working so valiantly, knows also when and how to play.
